THE PONTIFICAL MISSION SOCIETIES (PMS)

The PMS is one institution with a common purpose of fostering the universal missionary spirit in the Church. The PMS promotes mission through sacrifice, fundraising and mutual prayer. The common task of these societies is to keep before us the essential truth that: ‘the Church is missionary by her very nature..’ (Ad Gentes 2 – Second Vatican Council’s Decree on the missionary activity of the Church.

The PMS help the Church to respond to the missionary mandate by Christ; “Go and make disciples of all nations …..” . (Matt. 28:19-20).

There are 4  societies under the PMS:

  1. The Society of the Propagation of Faith
  • Founded by a lay person, Pauline Marie Jaricot in 1822.
  • Made pontifical in 1922 by Pope Pius XI.

AIM

  • Encourages all Christ’s faithful to pray and offer sacrifices for the mission.

MISSION DAY

  • World Mission Sunday
  1. The Society of the Missionary Childhood
  • Founded by Bishop Charles de Forbin Janson in 1843.
  • Made pontifical in 1922 by Pope Pius XI.

AIM:

  • To awaken and enliven the universal missionary spirit in the children.
  • To encourage the children to be aware of the needs of other children and offer support in their own little way – both spiritual and material.

 

MOTTO:

  • Children Helping Children

 

Who belongs to this society?

  • Children 0 – 14 years.

 

ACTIVITIES FOR ANIMATORS

  • Formation for facilitators
  • SOMAs – school of missionary animators (levels 1 – 5)
  • Aim os this school:
  • To form animators to be aware of their calling as Christian/pastoral agents and encourage them to participate in the life and mission of the church

The society offers formation/animation to children in four areas:

  • Missionary Catechesis
  • Missionary Service
  • Missionary Spirituality
  • Missionary Communion

 

Christ gives a special and direct invitation to the children to participate in the mission of the church (Mk. 10:14) .. ‘let the children come to me….’.

The children participate by being His disciples and help make disciples for Him.

 

MISSION DAY: EPIPHANY SUNDAY

 

  1. The Society of St. Peter Apostle
  • Founded by two ladies; Jean Bigard and Stephane in 1856.
  • Made pontifical in 1922 by Pope Pius XI.

Aim:

  • To promote missionary vacations by promoting and supporting formation to priesthood and religious life.

MISSION DAY

  • Vocation Sunday

 

  1. The Missionary Union of the Clergy, Religious and Laity
  • Founded by Fr. Paolo Manna in 1916.
  • Made pontifical in 1956 by Pope benedict XV

AIM:

  • To promote missionary formation and awareness among the clergy, religious and laity ….all persons involved in pastoral ministry.
